JAKARTA - National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo supports the proposal from the Commission for Accelerating Police Reform (KPRP) regarding the restructuring of the career path for senior police officers in the Indonesian National Police (Polri), including mechanisms for preparing candidates for the position of National Police Chief.

According to Sigit, the regulation of the career path fundamentally aims to prepare potential police leaders who have sufficient capabilities and experience to occupy strategic positions.

“In general, the recommendation for the career path means that from the Assistant for Human Resources (As SDM), especially, it provides a picture related to potential police leaders, not just the National Police Chief,” said Sigit at the National Police Headquarters in Jakarta on Thursday (7/5/2026).

“Those who have the capabilities that are certainly eligible and worthy to then be given the space and opportunity to become potential leaders, whether at the provincial police (Polda) level, at the national headquarters level, or as the highest police leader,” he stated.

Sigit emphasised that preparing the career progression is a mandatory task within the internal structure of the National Police.

“And that is indeed a necessity that we must implement,” he said.

He explained that the authority to propose lies with the National Police Commission (Kompolnas), while the final decision rests with the President.

“However, clearly, all of that becomes part of what we must prepare, and of course, that is the authority of Kompolnas to propose, and the policy will be with Mr President,” Sigit remarked.

Secretary of the KPRP, Ahmad Dofiri, stated that a police officer can only be proposed to become a senior officer after fulfilling a minimum service period of 25 years and undergoing high-level leadership education such as at the Senior Police Leadership Education Institute (Sespimti) or the National Defence Institute (Lemhannas).

The KPRP also proposes that senior officers undergo a series of strategic positions progressively, from one-star to three-star ranks, before having the opportunity to become the National Police Chief.

According to Dofiri, this scheme ensures that an officer has mature and diverse experience before occupying the highest position in the Bhayangkara Corps.

However, Dofiri emphasised that the proposal is not intended to limit the tenure of the National Police Chief, but rather to regulate the career progression of officers in a more structured manner.

“So there is no limitation on the National Police Chief’s tenure. The discussion is approximately like that in the commission, the career path that is regulated,” said Dofiri.
