National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo has addressed the case of a Mobile Brigade (Brimob) officer, Bripda MS, who allegedly assaulted a madrasah student with the initials AT until the victim died in Tual, Maluku.

He stated that both ethical and criminal proceedings against Bripda MS are currently under way and will be conducted transparently and accountably.

"I believe the case is already being processed. It is currently under in-depth investigation, handled by the district police with assistance from the Maluku Regional Police," Listyo told reporters in Purwakarta, West Java, on Saturday (21 February).

"The process is ongoing. I believe we will be transparent about matters such as these," he added.

Previously, National Police Headquarters publicly issued a formal apology regarding the alleged assault committed by Brimob officer Bripda MS in Tual City, Maluku.

In the assault, footage of which went viral on social media, the madrasah student identified as AT was seen suffering from bleeding and ultimately could not be saved.

National Police Public Relations Division Head Inspector General Johnny Eddizon Isir stressed that the police institution deeply regrets the incident and expressed profound empathy to the victim's family.

"The National Police extends its deepest condolences over the death of the victim and empathises with the victim's extended family over this incident," Isir said in a statement on Saturday afternoon.

He conveyed an apology to the victim's family and the public. Isir emphasised that the violent act committed by the individual officer was a deviant individual action and does not represent the police institution.

"The National Police apologises for the actions of this individual officer, which are inconsistent with the values of Tribrata and Catur Prasetya," he said.

Isir said the National Police will ensure that the legal process against the Brimob officer is carried out transparently, guaranteeing that action will be taken through both criminal and ethical proceedings.

**Suspect Status**

Bripda MS has been named a suspect by the Tual District Police.

He was immediately placed in the Tual District Police detention facility following a case review on Friday evening (20 February).

Tual District Police Chief Senior Commissioner Whansi Des Asmoro said that a number of items of evidence have been secured, including a tactical helmet, motorcycles, and equipment attached to the helmet.

"We have secured the tactical helmet belonging to Bripda MS, two motorcycles, the victim's motorcycle key, and other equipment from the helmet," he said.

His office has also coordinated with the Maluku Regional Police's Professional and Security Division regarding disciplinary action against Bripda MS. He affirmed that the officer will face both criminal proceedings and the police code of ethics process.

Whansi explained that fourteen witnesses have been examined, from both the victim's family and other Brimob members who were present at the crime scene.

In the fatal assault case, Bripda MS faces multiple charges.

The first is Article 35 in conjunction with Article 14 of the amendment to Law Number 23 of 2002 on Child Protection, carrying a maximum sentence of seven years' imprisonment.

Bripda MS is also charged under Article 474 paragraph 3 of the Criminal Code, carrying a maximum sentence of five years' imprisonment.

Additionally, the Tual District Police Chief and Maluku Regional Police Brimob Unit Commander Senior Commissioner Irfan visited the victim's family home in Vitditan Village, North Bula Subdistrict, Tual, on Friday morning (20 February).

During the visit, the Tual District Police Chief apologised to the family of the late AT.

The police chief promised the victim's family that the case would be thoroughly investigated. He expressed hope that the family would trust and leave the matter entirely to the police.

The police chief and Irfan shook hands and embraced members of the family. In tears, the victim's father, Rijik Fikri Tawakal, demanded that Bripda MS receive the harshest possible punishment.

Rijik further requested that the case be investigated openly and transparently. He warned that if the matter is perceived as being handled slowly, it could trigger further problems and escalation.

"As a parent, I demand that this matter be handled as fairly as possible. I am only afraid that new problems will arise, that the family may take action beyond rational thought," he said.
