Jakarta – National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo disclosed the peak hours for traffic accidents during the homecoming season in a cross-sectoral coordination meeting regarding preparations for the 2026 Ketupat Operation at the STIK-PTIK Building in Jakarta on Monday.

Based on accident analysis and evaluation, he stated that the highest number of traffic accidents occur between 9:00 AM and 12:00 PM, with a total of 532 incidents. This timeframe is considered high-risk due to increased public activity on roads, including commuting to work, inter-city travel, and daily mobility.

“Beyond traffic congestion, driver conditions are also believed to influence the rise in accident numbers during these hours,” he said.

According to the evaluation, the most dominant cause of accidents is failure to maintain safe distance, accounting for 1,156 cases. Other contributing factors include inattention to vehicles ahead and excessive speed.

“Fatigue and drowsiness while driving remain common triggers for accidents, particularly on long-distance journeys,” he noted.

The National Police Chief further revealed that analysis shows traffic accident figures have declined. Based on evaluation results, the number of accidents decreased by 31.43 per cent, whilst fatalities fell by 53.24 per cent.

Additionally, serious injury cases decreased by 7.19 per cent, and minor injuries dropped by 27.85 per cent compared to the previous period.

Despite these improvements, he cautioned that certain peak accident hours remain a concern.

“Although there has been a decline, we believe there are still specific times that represent accident hotspots and warrant serious attention,” he stated.

He added that these findings will inform the police’s enhanced road safety awareness campaigns, particularly ahead of the homecoming and return journey periods, which are anticipated to see significant traffic volumes.

The police will intensify public education and safety campaigns to further reduce accident figures in 2026. These efforts include safety awareness campaigns, monitoring of high-risk locations, and increased patrols during hours identified as having elevated accident risk.

The National Police will conduct the Ketupat Operation from 13 to 25 March 2026 under the tagline “Safe Homecoming and Happy Families.” Hundreds of thousands of joint personnel will be deployed to ensure security and provide services to the public during the Eid holiday homecoming season.
