National Police Chief outlines government efforts to address global conflict
Jakarta — The National Police Chief, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, outlined Indonesia’s government efforts in addressing global conflicts occurring in the Middle East.
According to the National Police Chief, President Prabowo Subianto has convened all government elites and key figures to emphasise that Indonesia must actively implement a free and active (non-aligned) political stance to maintain world peace.
“The government is certainly making every effort to ensure that such incidents or conflicts can be promptly resolved,” said Sigit during an iftar gathering with the Indonesian Armed Forces and National Police at Bhayangkara Field, National Police Headquarters in Jakarta on Wednesday.
According to him, Indonesia’s entry into the Board of Peace (BoP) represents one of the government’s efforts to help address global conflicts, although the decision has been questioned by some quarters.
He noted that whilst major institutions traditionally tasked with maintaining peace have not been heeded by the United States, Indonesia’s membership on the Board of Peace provides President Prabowo an opportunity to voice calls for peace.
“Inevitably, the President sought to join BoP so that there remains an opportunity to speak about peace in the Middle East, and this is what he is currently doing,” he said.
Additionally, Sigit stated that President Prabowo is also working to protect the Indonesian economy from the impacts of global circumstances, such as President Trump’s tariff war, which has been successfully reduced through diplomatic efforts by the head of state.
“Alhamdulillah, thanks to the diplomacy undertaken by the President, tariffs on Indonesian imports to America have been reduced from 32 per cent to 19 per cent,” he said.
Sigit further noted that whilst the United States Supreme Court decided on a 15 per cent import tariff for all countries, this decision still faces debate between Trump and the US Congress.
Sigit emphasised that President Prabowo Subianto continues to pursue trade diplomacy. On one hand, Indonesia has been granted zero per cent import tariffs for certain commodities and specific products such as footwear, furniture, textiles and semiconductor chips.
“This provides space for Indonesian industries to continue production,” said Sigit.
He noted that the zero per cent tariff also applies to over 1,800 Indonesian commodities.
Sigit added that this trade diplomacy serves as the government’s effort to ensure the Indonesian economy continues to function, maintains growth and creates new employment opportunities.
“The President is also driving various programmes, including Astacita and fast-track initiatives as well as national priority programmes, which are expected to stimulate the economy and create new jobs,” said Sigit.
