National Police Chief Affirms Transparent Handling of Brimob Officer Who Allegedly Beat Student to Death

National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo has broken his silence regarding the alleged assault by a Mobile Brigade (Brimob) officer, First Class Private MS, which resulted in the death of a student identified by the initials AT in Tual, Maluku. The Police Chief confirmed that legal proceedings against the perpetrator are currently under way.

"The case is already being processed. It is currently undergoing further examination and investigation, handled by the district police with assistance from the Maluku Regional Police," General Sigit told reporters in Purwakarta, West Java, on Saturday (21/2/2026).

General Sigit assured that both legal action and ethical code proceedings would be conducted transparently. "The process is currently ongoing. I believe matters such as these should be handled with full transparency," he stressed.

Previously, the Indonesian National Police (Polri) had issued a public apology regarding the incident of alleged assault committed by Brimob officer First Class Private MS against a student with the initials AT, which resulted in the victim's death in Tual City, Maluku. The police expressed their deepest condolences over the victim's passing.

Head of the National Police Public Relations Division, Inspector General Johnny Eddizon Isir, stated that the institution deeply regretted the incident and expressed profound empathy towards the victim's family.

"The National Police extends its deepest condolences over the victim's death and expresses empathy to the victim's family over this incident," Isir said in a statement on Saturday (21/2/2026).

He conveyed an apology to the victim's family and the public. Isir emphasised that the act of violence committed by the individual officer was a deviant individual action and did not represent the National Police institution.

"The National Police apologises for the actions of this individual officer, which are not in line with the values of Tribrata and Catur Prasetya," he said.

Isir stated that the National Police would ensure the legal process against the Brimob officer would be conducted transparently. He guaranteed that enforcement would be carried out through both criminal and ethical proceedings.

"The National Police is firmly committed to enforcing the law and the code of ethics against the individual personnel involved in a transparent and accountable manner," he affirmed.
