National Food Agency projects national rice availability to exceed 47 million tonnes
Jakarta — Indonesia’s National Food Agency (Bapanas) projects that national rice availability will reach approximately 47 million tonnes throughout 2026, reflecting strong supply conditions and a surplus capable of meeting the public’s needs from domestic production.
“National food availability is assured to be in strong condition and able to meet the public’s needs throughout the year,” said Rachmi Widiriani, Director of Distribution and Food Reserves at Bapanas, in Jakarta on Wednesday.
She noted that based on the Rice Food Balance Projection as of 5 March 2026, the National Food Agency estimates total national rice availability throughout this year can reach approximately 47.1 million tonnes.
“This amount is more than sufficient to meet the consumption needs of the Indonesian public throughout 2026,” she said.
“Indonesian society’s monthly rice requirements remain relatively stable at 2.5 million tonnes. So for rice, Indonesia is already in surplus and we are strong,” Rachmi explained.
In detail, the projection of total rice availability of 47.1 million tonnes comprises opening year stocks estimated at 12.4 million tonnes, plus the projected 2026 national rice production targeted to reach 34.7 million tonnes.
With total projected national consumption needs of approximately 31.1 million tonnes, Indonesia is projected still to hold year-end stocks of up to 16 million tonnes, thereby strengthening the national rice availability position.
