National Energy Council collaborates with Pertamina and PLN to discuss electric stoves
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Energy Council (DEN) will summon Pertamina and PLN to discuss the programme for transitioning from gas stoves to electric stoves, as part of the government’s efforts to enhance energy resilience and control energy subsidies.
“It has been discussed to some extent. On Wednesday (8/4), I have already invited (the stakeholders), yes. We will discuss it then,” said DEN member Unggul Priyanto to ANTARA in Jakarta on Monday.
Unggul stated that in the meeting, DEN wants to hear explanations from Pertamina, the Directorate General of Oil and Gas (Ditjen Migas), and PLN. From Pertamina and Ditjen Migas, explanations will be requested regarding the supply of LPG and its consumption in Indonesia.
Meanwhile, from PLN, he wants to hear how prepared the company is to provide electricity if the government implements the transition programme from gas stoves to electric stoves.
By using electric stoves, Unggul stated that Indonesia can reduce its dependence on energy imports, particularly LPG.
Moreover, Indonesia has natural resources in the form of coal, making it possible for Indonesia to generate its own electricity.
“In the future, LPG subsidies should start to be reduced and redirected to electricity. Electricity subsidies are easier to control,” he said.
Changing from LPG stoves to electric stoves has come under the spotlight from Eddy, as LPG prices are also influenced by soaring global oil prices.
The current global oil prices for Brent and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) are above $100 per barrel, higher compared to the average oil price in January 2026, where Brent (ICE) was $64 per barrel.
“As is known, Indonesia imports 75-80% of its LPG needs, the price of which aligns with crude oil prices,” said Eddy.
In the future, he continued, he will support the government’s efforts to accelerate electrification, both in the transportation sector, industry, and cooking using electric stoves.
The idea of transitioning from LPG stoves to electric stoves was previously floated during President Joko Widodo’s (Jokowi) administration.
However, in September 2022, PT PLN (Persero) cancelled the programme to switch 3-kilogramme (kg) LPG stoves to electric stoves to maintain public comfort in the post-COVID-19 economic recovery.
