National Domestic Workers Day, Civil Coalition Demands Ratification of Domestic Workers Protection Bill
The Civil Society Coalition for the Ratification of the Draft Law on the Protection of Domestic Workers (RUU PPRT) is demanding the House of Representatives and President Prabowo Subianto to immediately ratify the Domestic Workers Protection Law. The demand was made in conjunction with the commemoration of National Domestic Workers Day, which falls on 15 February 2026.
The coalition considers the ratification of the RUU PPRT to have dragged on for far too long. On the commemoration of Labor Day on 1 May 2025, President Prabowo had promised to ratify the RUU PPRT within three months.
National Advocacy Network for Domestic Workers (Jala PRT) Coordinator Lita Anggraini said discussions on the RUU PPRT through hearings at the DPR have only gone in circles with no meaningful progress.
“This bill has been fought for over 22 years. How much longer must domestic workers wait for legal protection so they are protected while working?” said Lita, as quoted from a written statement on Sunday, 15 February 2026.
The coalition demanded that House Speaker Puan Maharani push for the ratification of the RUU PPRT.
“We strongly demand that DPR Speaker Puan Maharani open her heart as a woman and bring this bill to a DPR plenary session for immediate ratification,” said the Civil Coalition.
The coalition stated it has fought with all its might for this bill. They have met with the DPR several times, but to no avail. The coalition said Prabowo’s promise should have been something to hold onto.
“The DPR appears to have stalled on discussing this bill. It has dragged on to this day despite Prabowo’s three-month promise. Yet what has happened is that after nearly one year, there has been no significant progress made by the DPR,” said Eva Kusuma Sundari from Institut Sarinah, representing the RUU PPRT Coalition.
Coinciding with National Domestic Workers Day, the Civil Coalition for the Ratification of the RUU PPRT is urging Prabowo to fulfill his promise. If he does not, the coalition will once again occupy the DPR and stage protests at the Presidential Palace.
