Nadiem Apologises and Admits Lack of Understanding of Bureaucratic Culture
Jakarta, VIVA – Former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Nadiem Makarim, delivered an emotional statement after undergoing seven months of detention related to a case involving him.
During a doorstop interview amid proceedings at the Central Jakarta District Court on Tuesday, 14 April 2026, Nadiem chose to engage in self-reflection while extending an open apology to the public and political figures.
“Thank you, friends from the media. Today, I want to share a little story. I’ve been in prison for seven months, and although alhamdulillah, I’m grateful that all the allegations have not been proven,” he said.
In his statement, Nadiem admitted that his leadership style during his tenure often sparked friction, particularly due to an approach deemed misaligned with bureaucratic culture.
“I want to acknowledge this: I may not have always respected bureaucratic culture when I entered. I brought in many people from outside, young professionals who may have created frictions,” Nadiem stated.
He also realised that he was overly focused on professional work aspects, neglecting the political and social dimensions inherent to public office.
“I may have been less courteous in my communication. I was less respectful and did not pay proper respects to figures, both from society and politics. I was wrong in not understanding that part of my duties included a political function,” he said.
In a humble tone, Nadiem extended an apology for his attitudes and statements while serving as minister.
“For that, I want to apologise sincerely. I want to apologise profusely if there were any words or behaviours from me as Minister that were displeasing,” he remarked.
Furthermore, he revealed that the seven months behind bars were a heavy experience, especially being separated from his family and children. Nevertheless, Nadiem claimed to remain optimistic and drew strength from the journeys of national figures.
“That gives me strength, gives me inspiration, and that’s why even in a dire situation like this, I remain optimistic. I still love my country; I believe that ultimately, justice remains the foundational principle of the Indonesia I love,” he said.
