Mysterious Fires at Sleman Resident’s Home Suspected to be Triggered by Chicken Slaughter Waste
A team of experts from Gadjah Mada University (UGM) has revealed preliminary findings from its investigation into the recurring fires that have plagued the home of Mutfiana in Seyegan, Sleman, DI Yogyakarta.
The Coordinator of the Center for the Study of Entropy Retardation (PKPE) at the Faculty of Engineering, UGM, Alva Edy Tontowi, stated that the team’s preliminary conclusion is that the fires are associated with the presence of hydrogen gas (H2) at the location.
“The hydrogen gas is strongly suspected to originate from the fermentation process of organic waste from chicken slaughter,” said Alva in a statement on Wednesday (June 3) evening.
For information, the Fia family does run a chicken slaughter business at their home.
According to Alva, it is also possible that other compounds are present along with the suspected hydrogen gas, which are more easily flammable at room temperature, namely phosphine gas (PH3).
It is suspected that this gas could form from phosphate-rich materials such as chicken bones and hard parts of feathers.
“Unfortunately, this phosphine gas is not easily detectable and will burn out if it comes into contact with oxygen. It is very possible that this phosphine gas is what ignites the hydrogen gas that is released simultaneously. This still needs to be investigated further,” explained Alva.
The UGM team is currently also examining other potential sources, namely liquid waste, which is currently in the laboratory analysis stage.
In the meantime, the UGM team recommends that the air circulation inside Fia’s house be opened as widely as possible.
In addition, the homeowner is advised to install a blower or fan to prevent the possibility of gas leakage accumulating to a level sufficient to ignite a fire.
Furthermore, it is recommended that flammable items be removed from inside the house.
“The UGM team will help carry out saturation of alkaline liquids (lime water) on the soil and floor of the house, to reduce the possibility of Clostridium bacteria, which play a role in producing hydrogen gas,” said Alva.
The mysterious fires at Fia’s house have been going on for almost two weeks.
So far, there have been more than 80 incidents of fires suddenly igniting objects inside the house.
In fact, since two days ago, the spread of fire points has expanded to the area of the shop building used by Fia’s family as a place to take refuge. This shop is located to the north of Fia’s house.
The Fia family has mapped at least more than 65 fire points since the incident began.
