Mutfiana's Sleman Home Still Plagued by Mysterious Fires
Items in Mutfiana’s home in Seyegan, Sleman continue to burn mysteriously, with the incidents occurring dozens of times over the past week. The fire terror persisted at her residence on Wednesday, 26 May, when a towel suddenly caught fire. “There are still fires, and the locations keep changing. The latest was last night at around 10:55 PM, burning a towel,” Mutfiana said during an interview at her home on Thursday, 28 May 2026. The fire incidents began on Saturday, 23 May, and have now occurred 39 times. Typically, the flames consume fabrics, furniture, and other flammable items. “In total, 39 fires across 34 different points have occurred. Furniture, clothing, mats, and other flammable items have been consumed. But it’s strange—the top parts burn while the underside remains untouched,” she explained. Mutfiana reported the strange incidents to the police, who deployed the Gegana unit. The team concluded that a septic tank leak had released methane gas, which is highly flammable. Mutfiana promptly repaired the septic tank pipes, yet fires continued to erupt unexpectedly. “We have followed all Gegana’s recommendations. The clothes have been moved, but fires still occur,” she said. She then consulted the police again. According to Gegana, the fires persist due to residual methane gas that has not fully dissipated. “Gegana said it’s just a matter of burning off the remaining underground gas. Methane could take weeks or months to dissipate,” she added. She and her husband and child are temporarily evacuating at night. However, the building, which also serves as a poultry slaughterhouse, is guarded every evening. “We’re staying with neighbours, not venturing far. But we keep watch right next to the house. If we don’t spot it in time, everything will catch fire,” she said. Residents of Padukuhan Mriyan X, Margomulyo, Seyegan, Sleman were alarmed by repeated fires that consumed household items in one home. Police investigations indicated the fires likely originated from a methane leak in the septic tank. The homeowner, Mutfiana, said the fires had occurred over the past two days, initially igniting fabrics. “It started Saturday, 23 May, at midnight. First, fabrics caught fire, then spread to door frames,” Mutfiana told journalists on Sunday, 24 May 2026. Soon after, fires reappeared in different locations, consuming other items. She said the incidents continued to recur until midday. “In 26 hours, there were 11 incidents. The largest occurred yesterday at 3 PM, spreading to the asbestos-cement roofing and continuing into the early hours. The latest was at 10 AM,” she said. She explained that each fire incident began without sparks or explosions. She said the items simply caught fire spontaneously. “There were no explosions or sparks—it just started burning suddenly,” she added.
