JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com — Atopic dermatitis, or eczema, is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterised by dry skin, redness, itching and sleep disturbances in children. This skin condition is the most common ailment experienced by babies aged 0–2 years. ‘Many parents think atopic dermatitis is simply dry skin. In reality it arises from disruption of the skin barrier and inflammation, which makes the skin feel very uncomfortable, especially for infants who cannot express what they feel,’ said Dr FX Clinton Sp.DVE at the launch of the ‘Together for Atopic Skin’ campaign in Jakarta on 21 May 2026. Atopic dermatitis typically develops in skin folds prone to sweating, such as the groin area or the thighs of babies. ‘The skin barrier in atopic skin is more vulnerable. Therefore, it is important to choose products specifically designed for atopic skin, with gentle formulations suitable for daily use,’ said Dr Fihzan Ginting, M.Ked(Ped), Sp.A. Recognising the scale of the impact, Mustela, one of the leading brands distributed by PT Interbat, has launched the ‘Together for Atopic Skin’ campaign. This educational movement aims to help families recognise signs of atopic dermatitis, protect the skin barrier, and provide access to credible medical information. The journey of research spanning more than seven decades has shown that eczema is a chronic condition that can only be controlled. ‘We realise that caring for atopic skin is not merely about easing symptoms. More than that, caring for atopic skin means accompanying families to navigate the phase with comfort,’ said Indira Natalia, Brand Manager of Mustela. ‘Babies with atopic skin cannot express itch; they can only cry through the night. Parents are often confused and struggle to sleep. This is why we invited specialists to provide credible education for families,’ explained Derrick Sukamto, President Director of PT Interbat, in Jakarta, on Thursday, 21 May 2026. Education about the skin microbiome is a key pillar in eczema management. Medical data notes an imbalance in the diversity of the skin microbiome in atopic skin, where harmful bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus dominate and trigger skin inflammation. To address this, Mustela has designed the Stelatopia line based on the E.V.E.I.L.S study, which specifically examined the skin profile of babies for ten consecutive years.
