Muslims in Bali Permitted to Perform Takbir without Loudspeakers if Idul Fitri Eve Coincides with Nyepi
Jakarta — The Ministry of Religion (Kemenag) has issued guidance for Muslims in Bali to perform the takbir (Islamic recitation) for Idul Fitri 1447 H/2026 in the event that the celebration falls on 19 March 2026, coinciding with the Hindu observance of Nyepi (Day of Silence).
One of the key points of the guidance permits Muslims to perform takbir without loudspeakers. The guidance was formulated based on coordination between the Ministry of Religion, local government, and religious and community leaders in Bali.
“From the outset, we have been coordinating with the local government and religious leaders in Bali. The principle is that if the timings do coincide, both celebrations can still be conducted with mutual respect and full understanding,” said Thobib Al Asyhar, Head of the Ministry of Religion’s Public Relations and Communications Bureau, in Jakarta recently.
Thobib stated that the guidance was issued to ensure that both religious celebrations, should their dates coincide, can take place smoothly, with full tolerance and mutual respect, whilst maintaining harmony in religious life in Bali.
The complete guidance is as follows: First, Muslims are permitted to perform takbir at the nearest mosque or prayer hall, proceeding on foot, without the use of loudspeakers, without setting off firecrackers, fireworks, or other noise-making devices, and using minimal lighting, from 18:00 to 21:00 local time (WITA).
Second, security and order during the takbir ceremony are the responsibility of each mosque or prayer hall administrator, whilst maintaining coordination with local law enforcement authorities.
