Musicians Boycott US 250th Anniversary Celebration as Donald Trump Fires Back Harshly
Preparations for the United States’ 250th anniversary celebration, branded as the Great American State Fair, are now mired in controversy. Several prominent musicians previously scheduled to perform at Washington DC’s National Mall have withdrawn en masse.
The artists claim they were misled about the event’s political background. The organiser, non-profit group Freedom 250, was established last year by Donald Trump’s administration with a CEO directly appointed by the president.
Despite Freedom 250 claiming the event is non-partisan and aims to unite the nation, many musicians believe it has become a divisive political platform.
In response to the wave of cancellations, US President Donald Trump issued a sharp statement on Truth Social on Saturday (30 May), labelling the withdrawing artists as ‘third-rate’ and suggesting they were experiencing ‘the yips’. Trump also hinted at taking over the event for his own purposes, stating: ‘I have instructed my representatives to assess the feasibility of holding an ’AMERICA IS BACK’ rally on Wednesday in Washington DC, at the same time and location. Only true patriots will be invited.’ He referred to himself as ‘the number one attraction in the world.’
Rapper Young MC and Morris Day were the first to withdraw. Young MC asserted that artists were not informed about the political involvement in the event. Similarly, legendary group The Commodores stated their music speaks for everyone and they chose not to affiliate with any political party. Country singer Martina McBride and Poison vocalist Bret Michaels also issued similar statements, with Michaels noting the event had evolved into something far more divisive than initially presented, even raising security concerns.
A list of artist participation status for the Great American State Fair has been compiled.
Despite the boycott, the US government continues with its major events to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Besides the Great American State Fair running from 25 June to 10 July, other plans include a UFC fight at the White House grounds and a Grand Prix race in the capital next August. As part of the celebrations, the government plans to release a limited-edition commemorative passport featuring Donald Trump’s portrait. Freedom 250 spokesperson Rachel Reisner remains optimistic, urging that ‘noise and division do not distract from the remarkable moment ahead,’ insisting the event belongs to all Americans. However, Freedom 250 has not yet officially announced changes to the lineup following the departure of major stars. This situation further underscores political polarisation in the US ahead of the historic anniversary, with some artists stepping back to maintain neutrality while others remain committed to separating national celebrations from partisan politics.
