Murder suspect to be analyzed

JAKARTA (JP): A housewife who confessed to slaying her mentally disabled daughter is scheduled to undergo a psychological examination on Monday, an officer has said.

West Jakarta Police detectives chief Maj. Idham Azis said on Sunday that a thorough examination of 52-year-old Nancy Gunawan would be conducted by city police psychologists.

"We wish to clarify her health status as soon as possible, but we have to wait until Monday as the police health unit is closed on Sunday," he told The Jakarta Post.

According to the officer, it is believed that the young woman's mother was in a state of depression prior to ending the life of her 20-year-old daughter. She is being detained at Tanjung Duren Police station.

On Saturday, Nancy shocked her neighborhood in Tomang when she reportedly decided to kill her daughter Vivin by cutting her throat. She then reported her crime to the local neighborhood chief.

Vivin was found laying on her bed with her neck slashed.

Officer Idham commented: "Upon hearing her story, we can easily conclude that she's mentally ill. But who knows, some criminal suspects prefer to be labeled crazy rather than receive maximum punishment."

During preliminary interrogation, Nancy said she felt like committing suicide shortly after killing her daughter, but drew back from the consideration, he said. (emf)
