Jakarta (ANTARA) - East Jakarta Mayor Munjirin is urging RT and RW administrators in the area to begin preparing independent waste sorting facilities to support the source-based waste management programme.

“As it progresses, I will convey those instructions to the RT and RW, sub-district heads, and village heads so that it does not become an obstacle,” said Munjirin during a visit to organic waste processing at Kramat Jati Market, East Jakarta, on Monday.

According to him, limited facilities must not become a barrier to implementing the sorting of organic and inorganic waste in residential areas.

Therefore, he asked sub-district heads, village heads, and environmental administrators to start implementing these simple steps while waiting for more adequate facilities to be provided.

In addition, Munjirin explained that the initial stage of waste sorting can be done using plastic bags of different colours to mark the type of waste.

“If the facilities are not yet available, to separate organic and inorganic waste, you can use plastic bags of different colours. For example, black plastic for inorganic and red plastic for organic,” clarified Munjirin.

He stated that this concept is deliberately applied so that the community can immediately implement the waste sorting programme without having to wait for assistance from the government.

Through this method, a culture of waste sorting is expected to quickly take root in residential areas.

He also opened opportunities for waste sorting facilities to be provided through community self-reliance. According to him, community forums, RT/RW, or other parties can contribute to providing separate bins and other supporting equipment.

“Now, I have instructed this to be implemented in the areas while waiting for facilities that can perhaps be provided through the independence of the RT/RW or community forums or possibly other parties who will provide them,” said Munjirin.

He added that these steps are part of efforts to reduce the volume of mixed waste and support sorting from the home to facilitate further processing, both for organic and inorganic waste.

“Slowly, of course, the facilities will also be prepared by us,” said Pramono in the East Jakarta area on Monday.

He conveyed this in response to comments from the Special Committee (Pansus) on Waste Management of the DKI Jakarta DPRD, which highlighted the minimal facilities provided to support the programme.

According to Pramono, the movement has only just begun, so it still requires time to provide the facilities and infrastructure.
