Munjirin urges Kramat Jati Market to consistently sort organic waste
Jakarta (ANTARA) - East Jakarta Mayor Munjirin is encouraging Kramat Jati Market to consistently sort organic waste through strengthened education and assistance for market managers.
“If this is more focused on PD Pasar Jaya’s management. So, we will later encourage PD Pasar Jaya to be focused and consistent in implementing this waste sorting,” said Munjirin during a visit to organic waste processing at Kramat Jati Market, East Jakarta, on Monday.
According to him, the East Jakarta City Government will assist PD Pasar Jaya as the market manager to ensure that the waste sorting system can be implemented optimally in all markets under its authority.
He emphasised that the involvement of market traders is an important part of the success of the programme.
Therefore, education on sorting organic and inorganic waste continues to be carried out gradually to traders as well as market managers.
Nevertheless, Munjirin said the main focus of the East Jakarta City Government (Pemkot) remains on residential areas, from RT/RW neighbourhoods to villages.
“If Pemkot is more focused on housing areas, villages, RT/RW. For markets, there is management from PD Pasar Jaya,” said Munjirin.
According to him, markets are one sector that needs special attention because the volume of waste produced is quite large every day.
He revealed that the Director of PD Pasar Jaya has also expressed readiness to implement the waste sorting system in all markets under its management.
“Earlier, the Director himself has agreed that for all markets, they will implement the waste sorting process,” said Munjirin.
The organic waste processing programme at Kramat Jati Market is part of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government’s policy to reduce the waste burden on the Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST) Bantargebang.
Organic waste will then be processed into useful products, including fertiliser for landscaping and city greening needs.
Through this step, Munjirin hopes that public awareness of the importance of waste management will increase, creating a cleaner and healthier environment in East Jakarta.
“As a follow-up to the waste sorting programme that we have launched, the DKI Jakarta Government through Pasar Jaya will collaborate with the community that has concerns for waste handling, especially organic and inorganic waste,” said Pramono.
He mentioned that Kramat Jati Market is one of the initial points for waste management because the volume of waste produced is quite large every day. From that market, it is estimated that around five tonnes of waste is produced every day.
From a total of 153 markets managed by Perumda Pasar Jaya, he said, at least around 500 tonnes of waste is transported to Bantargebang every day.
Pramono also ensured that the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is partnering with the private sector in processing that waste to produce useful products, especially for landscaping and fertiliser needs.
