Multiple murderer arrested

SURABAYA: Police have arrested a 25-year-old man suspected of
murdering an entire family on Jl. Jojoran on Feb. 16, Antara
reported yesterday.

The suspect, identified by his initials Sg, is a Surabaya
rickshaw driver, Surabaya Police Chief Col. Rivai W said.

He said the premeditated murder was motivated by the suspect
being hard pressed to raise Rp 200,000 ($87) to pay for a
rickshaw he had lost.

The victims were 44-year-old Sukarjo, an employee at Airlangga
University, his wife Hari Ningsih (34) and his sons Eko (16) and
Danang (12).

The suspect found Danang alone at the house. He beat the boy
to death with a plank, and then killed Eko when she came home. He
killed the children's mother and father separately.

The suspect buried his victims in the backyard and covered the
surface with cement. He made off with Rp 250,000 in cash and a
motorcycle.

The Feb. 16 murder was uncovered a few days ago when a
relative, who had tried to visit the house several times, broke
the door down and eventually found the bodies.

The report did not say how the police found the suspect. Rivai
said the suspect had confessed to the crime. (emb)
