MUI: Iran-US Ceasefire Could Potentially Be Betrayed During Hajj Season
The Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI) has welcomed the initiative for a ceasefire between the United States (US) and Iran mediated by Pakistan. Nevertheless, MUI highlights the potential for covert betrayal of the ceasefire agreement and incitement among Muslim countries as the Hajj season begins, coinciding with the end of the two-week truce period.
“MUI views that the potential for betrayal of the agreement remains,” said the Chairman of MUI’s Foreign Relations and International Cooperation Division, Professor Sudarnoto Abdul Hakim, to Republika on Thursday (9/4/2026).
Sudarnoto explained that the history of international relations shows that violations of agreements can occur in various forms, such as unilateral interpretations of the agreement’s content, delays or avoidance in implementing commitments, and covert actions contrary to the spirit of peace.
Therefore, he assessed that strong international oversight mechanisms and genuine moral and political commitments from both parties are needed so that this agreement is not merely symbolic but truly effective.
Sudarnoto emphasised that these oversight mechanisms are crucial to prevent efforts by the US and Israel to divide the Muslim ummah. In this context, he stated that this year’s Hajj implementation must guarantee security and order, free from agitation by any party.
“The US and Israel could exploit this moment (Hajj season) to divide and incite as part of the betrayal of the agreement,” he said.
MUI also affirmed that this ceasefire must serve as momentum to push for the cessation of all forms of aggression and violence in other regions, particularly those carried out by Israel in Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon. He rejected the ongoing oppression and violence in Lebanon while the ceasefire between Iran and the US is in effect.
