MPR Leader Says Indonesia Enters 'Safe Zone' for Energy After Securing Supply from Russia
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - MPR Deputy Chairman Eddy Soeparno assesses that Indonesia has now entered an energy ‘safe zone’ after the government successfully secured supplies of crude oil and LPG from Russia. According to Eddy, this success is inseparable from the energy diplomacy conducted by President Prabowo Subianto amid unstable global energy market conditions. ‘With the supply and provision now guaranteed, I think we can say we have entered a safe zone,’ Eddy stated when met at the DPR/MPR RI Building on Wednesday (15/4/2026). In such a situation, importing countries, including Indonesia, must compete to obtain oil and gas supplies. ‘So whoever has this oil has the right to determine the price, the right to determine the volume, the right to determine to whom they sell,’ he said. Therefore, Eddy appreciates the government’s steps, which he deems successful in obtaining a new supply source from Russia, so that domestic energy needs can be more assured. ‘Thus, we do not need to worry that at some point, for example, our vehicles cannot run, ships cannot sail, trains cannot operate,’ Eddy explained. Furthermore, Eddy assured that to date, the national fuel oil (BBM) supply remains in a safe condition, including from import routes that have previously relied on Singapore and Malaysia. According to him, the main risk actually arises if supplier countries like Singapore do not receive crude oil supplies to be processed again. ‘What we cannot control is when Singapore does not get its crude oil supply to be processed and then resold to us,’ Eddy said. Nevertheless, Eddy assesses that to date, Singapore and Malaysia are still able to maintain supply stability, so there have been no significant disruptions to BBM distribution in Indonesia.
