Deputy Chairman of the MPR RI, Lestari Moerdijat (Rerie), stated that the issuance of a Joint Ministerial Decree (SKB) by seven ministers regarding the utilisation of artificial intelligence (AI) represents an important step to address the challenges of technological developments in the world of education.

“The utilisation of AI in education cannot be avoided. However, its presence must be managed well so that it does not replace the critical thinking process of students, but rather strengthens it,” said Rerie in a written statement on Monday (30/3/2026).

According to Lestari, this cross-ministerial regulation demonstrates the government’s seriousness in building a safe and sustainable digital education ecosystem.

Nevertheless, Rerie, the familiar name for Lestari, reminded that the implementation of this policy must be accompanied by strengthening digital literacy at all levels.

“Digital literacy and ethics in technology use must be a priority. Without it, the utilisation of AI could potentially lead to dependency and reduce the quality of learning,” emphasised Rerie, who is also a member of Commission X of the DPR RI.

Rerie also encouraged the enhancement of educators’ capacities so that they can utilise AI appropriately in the learning process. She assessed that the role of teachers is the key to maintaining education quality amid the rapid flow of digitalisation.

“Teachers must become facilitators who can direct the use of AI as a learning aid, not as a replacement for the learning process itself,” said Rerie.

Furthermore, Rerie stressed the importance of ongoing supervision and evaluation of the implementation of the SKB. The main goal of this policy—to create a generation that is technologically proficient as well as critically thinking—can be achieved.

“Digital transformation in the education sector must proceed in a balanced manner between the utilisation of technology and the strengthening of character and reasoning among students,” said Rerie.

Previously, the government officially issued the SKB of seven ministers on Guidelines for the Utilisation of Digital Technology and AI in Education. The establishment of the SKB was carried out in a meeting led by the Minister of State for Human Development and Culture RI (Menko PMK) Pratikno on Thursday (12/3).

The SKB was signed by seven ministers, namely the Minister of Home Affairs RI (Mendagri), Minister of Communications and Digital RI (Menkomdigi), Minister of Basic and Secondary Education RI (Mendikdasmen), Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology RI (Mendiktisaintek), Minister of Religious Affairs RI (Menag), Minister of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection RI (PPPA), and Minister of Population and Family Planning RI (Mendukbangga).

The guidelines regulate the utilisation of AI across all education pathways, from early childhood education to higher education, including formal and informal education.

This policy is seen as a strategic step to ensure that the use of AI in educational environments proceeds wisely, directed, and protects students from various digital risks.
