MP Supports PP Tunas: The World is Moving in the Same Direction
“If we look at it, this is not a standalone policy. The world is moving in the same direction. Indonesia is actually one of the most stringent in its implementation,” Nurul told reporters on Monday (13/4/2026). It is known that PP Tunas has been in effect since 28 March 2025. Nurul said that at least 19 countries have implemented, discussed, or will enact similar policies regarding restrictions on social media for children and adolescents. The government has emphasised that there is no compromise on digital platforms’ compliance with the regulation. Communications and Digital Minister Meutya Hafid has even appreciated several platforms such as X and Bigo Live that are beginning to adjust their policies, including raising the minimum user age limit and strengthening moderation. According to her, the government’s firmness is important to encourage other platforms to quickly follow the rules. She assessed that without a firm stance, platforms would tend to be slow or even negligent in making adjustments. “If there is no firmness, platforms will tend to be slow or even negligent. With the government’s clear position, all digital industry players are forced to comply,” said the Head of the Media and Opinion Mobilisation (MPO) Division of the Golkar Party. In addition, she also assessed that Indonesia is currently at the forefront of countries with a progressive approach to protecting children in the digital space. She said that Australia and France have already moved towards strict restrictions. Meanwhile, many other countries are still at the consultation or policy formulation stage. According to her, Indonesia has stepped into the implementation and active oversight stage against digital platforms. She emphasised the importance of collaboration between the government, parents, and platform providers so that this policy has a real impact on the ground. “Child protection in the digital space cannot be left to one party alone. But the state must lead, and PP Tunas is a strong initial foundation,” she said. The government itself has prepared graduated sanctions for non-compliant platforms. Those sanctions range from warnings to access termination. With the strengthening global trend, policies like PP Tunas are expected to become the new standard in digital platform governance, particularly in protecting children in the digital era.”
