Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Chairman of Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Ahmad Sahroni, has urged the National Police to make it a habit to respond quickly and firmly to every criminal incident, which he believes can deter perpetrators from repeating their evil deeds.

He expressed appreciation for the swift action by the Makassar Metropolitan Police Command in arresting five perpetrators of a machete attack and stabbing that resulted in the death of a child with the initials Hilal (13) on Jalan Abu Bakar Lambogo. Such actions should be emulated by other National Police units.

“Thank you to the Makassar Metropolitan Police Chief and the Head of Criminal Investigation Unit for personally leading the operation; this should be emulated by other police resorts across regions. Make it a habit to respond quickly and firmly, so that perpetrators are deterred and crimes like this do not proliferate,” Sahroni said in his statement in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Sahroni noted that the tragic incident occurred on 12 May 2026, with the child victim suffering torn wounds on several parts of his body due to the machete attack and stabbing carried out by the five perpetrators.

The five perpetrators, with initials FN (19), YN (20), ASR (18), FDL (19), and RKY (18), are from the Makassar area and surroundings.

The arrests were made after officers received a report and quickly conducted an investigation.

He assessed that this quick working pattern should be emulated by other police resorts.

“Essentially, do not allow street violence to grow in their respective areas,” he said.

Furthermore, Sahroni believes that firm actions by the authorities like this will make street criminals think twice before carrying out their actions.

“I am confident that if the authorities are firm and quick like this, perpetrators will think a thousand times before acting. The National Police have already maximised prevention in various ways. So if there are still those who are stubborn, they should be dealt with firmly to deter and make them repent,” he said.

“I ask the Makassar Metropolitan Police to continue improving their performance, arresting all the troublemakers who are disturbing the peace until Makassar is safe, free from street violence,” Sahroni added.
