Mounting Rubbish in Angke Rusun, West Jakarta, Originates from Convection Waste
JAKARTA - The piles of rubbish in the area of the Simple Rental Housing (Rusunawa) Angke, Tambora, West Jakarta, are not solely from household waste produced by the flat’s residents. Tambora sub-district head, Pangestu Aji, revealed that the largest contributor to the rubbish volume comes from industrial waste from convection businesses. Based on data from the DKI Environment Agency (LH), convection residue dominates up to 70% of the total rubbish volume in Tambora, while domestic waste only accounts for 30%. “This needs to be a collective concern. So far, residents have only focused on household waste, even though most of it comes from convection production remnants,” said Pangestu when contacted by Kompas.com on Friday (3/4/2026). According to him, this convection residue waste requires special handling and should not burden the residents’ waste storage capacity. “Whereas if it were just household waste, it wouldn’t be that much. They (business operators) should be made like doormats, not throwing away indiscriminately. There must be supervision and responsibility from the business operators,” Pangestu stated. Pangestu also acknowledged that the rubbish pile problem is worsened by the limited number of official Temporary Waste Collection Points (TPS). Across Tambora sub-district, official TPS exist only at two locations: the 3R Hanura TPS in Tanah Sereal ward and the TPS in Duri Utara ward. The rest, including disposal spots around Rusun Angke, are merely unofficial temporary collection points or simply cart pooling locations. RT 07 RW 11 chairman, Suherman, said that many people from outside the flat area also dump rubbish there, making the volume uncontrollable. “That’s from outside, from other RTs, RW 3 and other places, lots too. Yeah, outsiders like that (who dump rubbish in the rusun). The part inside (the rusun) isn’t even collected,” Suherman explained when met at the location on Friday (3/4/2026). In response to this finding, Pangestu emphasised that they will not remain silent regarding the rubbish piles. His side, together with the Civil Service Police Unit and the Sub-District Environment Office, will increase supervision throughout the Tambora area.
