The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is collaborating with the University of Indonesia (UI) to process oyster shell waste in the Cilincing coastal area of North Jakarta. The waste will be utilised to create various useful products, ranging from paving blocks to souvenirs.

This step is taken as a solution to the problem of piled-up oyster shell rubbish along the Cilincing coast, which recently went viral on social media. In addition to reducing environmental pollution, the processing of this waste is also expected to add economic value.

The Assistant for Economy and Finance of DKI Jakarta, Suharini Eliawati, stated that the cooperation with UI is not new. In the previous year, oyster shell waste had been processed into paving blocks. Now, this innovation is being developed more broadly.

“Regarding oyster shell waste, we have already cooperated with UI,” said Eli at Taman Ismail Marzuki, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday (15/4/2026).

“If last year it was made into paving blocks, for this one it will be made into infrastructure facilities, for example for toilet needs, and also for souvenirs,” she added.

This programme is part of the DKI Provincial Government’s efforts to handle coastal waste problems sustainably. Oyster shell waste, which was previously considered worthless, is now processed into functional products that also have economic value.
