Mount Marapi erupted, spewing volcanic ash visible from Batusangkar in Tanah Datar, West Sumatra province, on Saturday (30 May 2026). The eruption occurred at 08:42 WIB. According to the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), the PVMBG Marapi Volcano Observation Post reported an ash column height of approximately 2,000 metres above the summit, which stands at about 4,891 metres above sea level. ‘The observed ash column was grey with thick intensity, drifting northeast. The eruption was recorded on the seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 30 mm and a duration of approximately one minute and 25 seconds,’ stated in the official report, cited on Saturday (30 May 2026). As of the report, the eruption is ongoing. Mount Marapi remains at Alert Level II (Waspada). Residents around Mount Marapi, as well as climbers, visitors, and tourists, are advised not to enter or conduct activities within a 3-kilometre radius of the eruption centre (Verbeek Crater). ‘Residents living near valleys, streams, and riverbanks originating from Mount Marapi’s peak should remain vigilant for potential lahar hazards, especially during the rainy season,’ stated by the Geological Agency of ESDM. In the event of ashfall, the public is urged to wear nose and mouth masks to prevent respiratory infections (ISPA), along with other protective gear for eyes and skin. Additionally, they should secure clean water supplies and clear thick volcanic ash from rooftops to prevent collapse.
