Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again today, Saturday (30/5/2026) at 08:42 WIB. According to the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), PVMBG Marapi Volcano Observation Post, the ash column was observed to be approximately 2,000 metres above the peak, which stands at about 4,891 metres above sea level.

“The observed ash column was grey in colour with thick intensity drifting towards the northeast. The eruption was recorded on the seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 30 mm and a duration of approximately 1 minute 25 seconds,” stated in the official report, cited on Saturday (30/5/2026).

As of the report, the eruption is ongoing. Mount Marapi remains at Level II (Caution) status. Residents around Mount Marapi, as well as climbers, visitors, and tourists, are advised not to enter or conduct activities within a 3-kilometre radius of the eruption centre (Verbeek Crater).

“Residents living near valleys, streams, and riverbanks originating from the peak of Mount Marapi should remain vigilant for potential lahar threats, particularly during the rainy season,” according to the Geological Agency of ESDM.

In the event of ashfall, the public is advised to wear nose and mouth masks to prevent respiratory infections (ISPA), and other protective gear for eyes and skin. Additionally, secure clean water supplies and clear thick volcanic ash from roofs to prevent collapse.

The Geological Agency of ESDM also urged all parties to maintain a conducive social atmosphere, avoid spreading false narratives (hoaxes), and not be provoked by unverified information. The public is encouraged to follow instructions from local authorities.
