Motorcyclists Must Be Vigilant: How to Avoid Bike Snatchings on the Road
JAKARTA — Motorbike snatchings have recently surged in several areas of Jakarta. Perpetrators even do not hesitate to use sharp weapons and firearms to carry out their acts. On Jalan Duri Raya, Kebon Jeruk, West Jakarta, a gang of bike thieves operated in front of a warung, pointing what appeared to be a pistol and firing shots on Sunday, 10 May 2026. Furthermore, on Jalan Arjuna Selatan, Kebon Jeruk, a victim of a snatching was stabbed after attempting to resist four perpetrators who seized their motorcycle and valuable items in the early hours of Monday, 4 May 2026. Training Director of Safety Defensive Consultant Indonesia, Sony Susmana, said the prevalence of snatching incidents could be triggered by worsening economic conditions. ‘The difficult economic conditions make riders and passengers on motorcycles an easy target for thieves to commit crimes,’ Sony told Kompas.com recently. He noted that the perpetrators typically operate in groups and carry sharp weapons, even firearms. Therefore riders are advised not to ride alone, especially on quiet roads. ‘It is hard to avoid this (snatching) unless a hard and firm law is applied, and riding in groups,’ Sony said. He also reminded riders to be more aware of their surroundings. If you see a suspicious group on the road, you should promptly detour and seek an alternative route that is busier. ‘If passing through quiet streets, even in daylight, try not to ride alone as much as possible. Check the surroundings too, if there is a suspicious group, it’s better to steer clear,’ he said. Meanwhile, Head of Safety Riding Promotion at PT Wahana Makmur Sejati, Agus Sani, advised riders to always use complete and safe riding gear. According to Agus, standard helmets, jackets, gloves, and other safety equipment not only protect against accidents but also help riders feel more confident when riding at night or in low-light conditions. In addition, riders are advised to choose routes that are familiar and avoid crime-prone paths. Riders are also urged to stay focused on their surroundings, especially if another vehicle suddenly approaches or moves suspiciously. ‘Try not to ride too slowly when riding alone. If possible, seek safety by riding alongside other vehicles when passing through crime-prone roads,’ Agus said. Equally important, riders should be alert to various ambush tactics on quiet roads, including people pretending to need help. ‘If you see someone collapsed or asking for help, avoid them and seek other assistance. This is to prevent the modus operandi of the snatchers,’ Agus said.
