Motorcycles Carrying Excessive Ice Loads Risk Wobbling
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The phenomenon of motorcycles carrying large quantities of ice remains common in several regions. Many riders transport loads exceeding capacity, leading to unstable riding positions. Besides endangering themselves, such conditions also pose threats to other road users. ‘Anything not in its proper place, including excess, should not be done. Riding in such a manner is extremely dangerous for oneself, others, the vehicle, and even the cargo itself,’ Victor told Kompas.com on Tuesday (26 May 2026). Victor explained that carrying overloaded and oversized ice loads disrupts vehicle balance. The asymmetric riding position makes motorcycles more prone to wobbling, especially on poor road surfaces. ‘Riding stability is severely compromised due to the asymmetric positioning and excessive weight, which risks vehicle wobbling. This is compounded by the fact that such transport often occurs on peripheral roads with substandard conditions,’ he said. Beyond safety concerns, the practice accelerates vehicle component wear. Excessive weight forces rims, tyres, and the motorcycle body to operate beyond normal capacity. Victor noted that water dripping from the ice load also creates additional road hazards. The asphalt surface can become slippery, increasing the risk of vehicles skidding. ‘This also damages the vehicle, from rims and tyres to the body, while dripping water can make roads slippery,’ Victor said. As a solution, Victor recommends ice transporters use vehicles designed for cargo, such as three-wheeled motorcycles or pickup trucks. He acknowledged that this option requires additional costs but is far safer and more efficient.
