Mother Claims Seaman Fandi Suspected Boxes of Meth Contained Bombs During DPR Hearing
Jakarta, VIVA – Nirwana, the mother of seaman Fandi Ramadhan who faces a death sentence, stated that her son had suspicions that the boxes of methamphetamine he was transporting on board contained bombs.
This was conveyed by Nirwana during a Public Hearing Meeting (RDPU) with Commission III of the DPR at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Thursday, February 26, 2026. She was accompanied by renowned lawyer, Hotman Paris, during the meeting.
Nirwana said that her son, Fandi, only found out that the boxes contained methamphetamine after he was arrested.
“I asked, ‘So, how did you know?’. ‘After the arrest, Mom, that’s when I found out I was carrying drugs,’” Nirwana said, imitating her son’s words.
“‘So, didn’t you ask?’. ‘I asked when the captain told us to load the goods. As soon as I lifted it, I felt uneasy. I said to my friend, ’Hey, what is this? But we’re supposed to be carrying oil. Don’t you think this is strange?’. ‘What’s wrong, Ndi?’. ‘This doesn’t feel right. Why would the ship carry these boxes? This doesn’t feel right. What if it contains bombs?’ That’s what my son said, Sir,’” she continued.
On that occasion, Nirwana also admitted that she was shocked that her son was caught carrying drugs. In fact, the ship mentioned in the contract was supposed to be a cargo ship.
She then asked Commission III of the DPR to help her as a parent to resolve the case involving her son, seaman Fandi.
“So, as a parent, I ask for justice and request that you help me to resolve the problem of my son,” she concluded.
Previously, the Public Prosecutor of the Batam Prosecutor’s Office, Riau Islands, stated that they would still seek the death penalty for six crew members of the Sea Dragon Terawa who were carrying nearly 2 tons of methamphetamine.
The death penalty was still sought despite criticism from the Chairman of Commission III of the DPR, Habiburokhman.
This statement was made by the Public Prosecutor during the hearing on the prosecutor’s response to the defendant’s plea (replik) at the Batam District Court on Wednesday, February 25, 2026.
“In principle, we as the public prosecutor remain with the criminal charges that have been read on Thursday, February 5, 2026,” said Public Prosecutor Muhammad Arfian during the trial.
