More Than Dangerous Driving: Toyota Calya Driver Caught with Three Fake Plates and Forged ID
Jakarta – Three of the four vehicle number plates found in the Toyota Calya that was driving the wrong way in the Gunung Sahari area, Central Jakarta on Wednesday 25 February 2026, have been confirmed as counterfeit.
Of the four plates, two bore Jakarta (B) codes, one bore a Bandung (D) code, and one bore a Garut (Z) code. One of the B plates and the D and Z plates were confirmed to be forged.
The Calya driver, Hafiz Mahendra, and his girlfriend from outside Jakarta were reportedly heading to Ancol for a holiday.
Regarding the vehicle registered with a Jakarta plate, an official explained that the car was supposedly purchased in Jakarta by an owner with a Jakarta identity card. “So the vehicle has its own vehicle identity. From the purchase, invoice, chassis number, engine number, it’s registered with the government and assigned a number plate by police. The number plate is Jakarta because it was registered using a Jakarta identity card,” the official said.
However, at the time of the incident, the installed plate was actually a Bandung-coded plate that did not correspond with the vehicle’s chassis and engine numbers. “This constitutes document forgery or vehicle identity falsification,” the official added.
When checked, Hafiz was found not to be carrying driving documentation such as a driving licence or vehicle registration. The national identity card (KTP) he carried was also suspected to be forged after verification using facial recognition technology.
According to the official, the name on the KTP was initialised HF and listed a Sidoarjo address. “The information on the KTP did not match the driver. So there is reasonable suspicion that the KTP is forged. After checking with facial recognition, his face and actual identity did not match what was on the KTP,” the official explained.
The incident occurred after the black Toyota Calya was filmed driving the wrong way and being chased by residents on Jalan Gunung Sahari, Sawah Besar, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday, which went viral on social media. In the video posted on Instagram account @lintasjakartaupdate, the vehicle appeared to be driving at high speed in the wrong direction on a congested road. The car struck several vehicles and motorcycles before eventually stopping after being pursued by residents and police officers.
Hafiz admitted he deliberately drove the wrong way because he was afraid of being fined by police for not carrying a driving licence and vehicle registration document.
