More students to boycott poll
YOGYAKARTA: More than one third of students at Yogyakarta's state-run Gadjah Mada University will shun the May 29 general election, according to a survey.
Chairman of the university's student senate M. Nurizal said yesterday that the election abstainers could reach 75 percent. Eleven percent of the 500 respondents to the questionnaire said they had not yet registered for polling day and another 28 percent said they were doubtful of their choices.
Of the students who will use their right to vote, 34 percent will vote for the United Development Party (PPP), 32 percent for the dominant Golkar and only 4 percent will vote for the Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI), while 21.5 percent refused to disclose their affiliation. The remaining students said they had yet to pick their choices. (23/amd)
