More Indonesians Migrating Abroad, 150,000 People Per Year
Indonesia’s Central Statistics Agency (BPS) has noted an increase in the number of Indonesian residents migrating abroad in 2025.
According to data from the 2025 Inter-Census Population Survey (SUPAS) by BPS, the net international migration rate in 2025 stands at minus 0.53 per 1,000 people, or 53 people per 100,000 residents.
“Based on the SUPAS 2025, the net international migration figure is recorded at minus 0.53, meaning that between the 2020 Long Form Population Census (LF SP 2020) and SUPAS 2025, there was a reduction in the population due to international migration averaging 53 people per 100,000 residents each year,” said Amalia during a press conference at BPS headquarters in Jakarta on Tuesday (5/5/2026).
The negative net international migration figure in 2025 is due to inbound migration to Indonesia recorded at 61 people entering per 100,000 residents annually, while outbound migration is 114 people per 100,000 residents annually.
With outbound international migration exceeding inbound migration, this indicates that more Indonesian residents are moving abroad. Given the net international migration rate of -0.53, it means there is an average reduction of 53 people per 100,000 Indonesian residents each year due to international migration.
When calculated against Indonesia’s population from SUPAS 2025, which totals 284.67 million people, the net international migration of 53 per 100,000 residents equates to an average of 150,875 Indonesian citizens migrating abroad each year.
The net migration figure based on SUPAS 2025, at 53 people per 100,000 residents, is higher than the results from LF SP 2020 or SUPAS 2015. In the LF SP 2020 results, the net migration was only 11 people per 100,000 residents, with inbound migration at 43 per 100,000 and outbound at 32 per 100,000.
Meanwhile, in SUPAS 2015, the net international migration was 50 per 100,000 residents, with inbound migration at 36 per 100,000 and outbound at 86 per 100,000.
