Mooy to head UN agency
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesian Ambassador to the European Union Adrianus Mooy has been appointed as Executive Secretary of the United Nation's Economic and Social Commission of Asia-Pacific.
Mooy, who served in the commission in the 1970s, was named to the post by UN Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali, Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Alatas announced yesterday.
He will begin his term on April 1, Alatas told reporters after briefing President Soeharto at the Merdeka Palace about Mooy's new appointment.
Mooy, an economist by training, will be the second Indonesian to be appointed to the post. The first one was A.A. Maramis who held the post in the 1970s.
"This is an honor for Indonesia," Alatas said. "The appointment is appropriate ... Mr. Mooy knows the ins and outs of the commission's affairs."
The minister added that Indonesia will now have to find a replacement for Mooy's post at the Indonesian representative office in the European Union in Brussels. "It's a very important post. We'll find the right person for the job."
Before moving to Brussels, Mooy was governor of Bank Indonesia (central bank) between 1988 and 1983. Before that, he served in the National Development Planning Board. (emb)
