Mooy to head UN agency<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesian Ambassador to the European Union
\nAdrianus Mooy has been appointed as Executive Secretary of the
\nUnited Nation's Economic and Social Commission of Asia-Pacific.<\/p>\n
Mooy, who served in the commission in the 1970s, was named to
\nthe post by UN Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali, Minister
\nof Foreign Affairs Ali Alatas announced yesterday.<\/p>\n
He will begin his term on April 1, Alatas told reporters after
\nbriefing President Soeharto at the Merdeka Palace about Mooy's
\nnew appointment.<\/p>\n
Mooy, an economist by training, will be the second Indonesian
\nto be appointed to the post. The first one was A.A. Maramis who
\nheld the post in the 1970s.<\/p>\n
\"This is an honor for Indonesia,\" Alatas said. \"The
\nappointment is appropriate ... Mr. Mooy knows the ins and outs of
\nthe commission's affairs.\"<\/p>\n
The minister added that Indonesia will now have to find a
\nreplacement for Mooy's post at the Indonesian representative
\noffice in the European Union in Brussels. \"It's a very important
\npost. We'll find the right person for the job.\"<\/p>\n
Before moving to Brussels, Mooy was governor of Bank Indonesia
\n(central bank) between 1988 and 1983. Before that, he served in
