Mobile Brigade Officer Beats Student to Death, Police Vow Firm Action
National Police Headquarters has issued an apology and confirmed it will take firm action against a member of Mobile Brigade Company 1, Battalion C Pelopor, First Class Private (Bripda) MS, who allegedly assaulted a state Islamic junior secondary school (MTsN) student identified as AT (14) until the victim died.
"The National Police conveys its apology for the actions of this individual officer, which are not in line with the values of Tribrata and Catur Prasetya," said National Police Public Relations Division Chief Inspector General Johnny Eddizon Isir in a written statement on Saturday (21 February).
Johnny Isir said the National Police expressed its deepest condolences over the victim's death and empathised with the bereaved family.
He stressed that the National Police would take firm action and would not provide any protection to the perpetrator. He confirmed that both ethical and criminal proceedings would be conducted transparently against the suspect.
"The National Police is firmly committed to the law enforcement process and the code of ethics against the individual personnel involved, in a transparent and accountable manner," he said.
Furthermore, he urged the public to continue monitoring the law enforcement process against the perpetrator.
Previously, Bripda MS allegedly struck the head of an MTsN student in Southeast Maluku named Arianto Tawakal (14), causing the victim to die in a pool of blood.
Not only Arianto, but the victim's older brother, Nasrim Karim (15), was also reportedly assaulted, suffering a broken bone. Bripda MS has since been secured and detained at the Tual Police Detention Centre for further examination.
Maluku Regional Police Chief Inspector General Dadang Hartanto confirmed that the handling of this case would be conducted on multiple levels, namely through criminal trial and an ethics hearing.
Maluku Regional Police Public Relations Chief Commissioner Rositah Umasugi added that if Bripda MS is lawfully proven to have committed a serious violation, the heaviest sanction — Dishonourable Discharge (PTDH) or dismissal — would be imposed.
