In the Indonesian maritime world, the name PT Samudera Indonesia is famous. Besides its great name, the company is also known to have international lines and provide world-class services.
Samudera is a maritime company which runs as an agency and terminal that covers regional shipping services, tanker services, offshore logistic services, ship management, forwarding and warehousing, field plant/project forwarding services, international freight forwarding, CFS/warehousing services, container depot services and land transportation services.
Established in 1964 Samudera's mission is boosting national development by building international transportation connections and inter-island transportation. Its formation was related to a new era of industrialization in Indonesia. And along the way, Samudera has became the most prominent shipping company in Indonesia.
It currently extends to Southeast Asian lines, including Bangkok, Singapore and Malaysia. It is also expected to move further afield, opening new maritime lines in the Middle East.
Samudera is continually expanding the area it operates in to increase its already very important role in the shipping transportation business.
Executive vice president Randy Effendi said: "We can't rely on one kind of business or area."
Indonesia, he said, is a very strategic country with great economic potential. To confine oneself to transportation seems very ordinary, he said, adding that Samudera should get involved in related businesses.
Samudera is also involved in other transportation sectors, including oil and petrochemicals, giving it a bigger base in the ocean transportation business.
It has a staff of 3,000 employees, a fleet of 55 ships and equipment of the latest technology. In the department of customer satisfaction, Samudera staff are made up of highly skilled professionals and disciplined employees.
According to Randy, the company's staff are trained both locally and overseas. To give better service, Samudera has opened 30 local and international branches.
As a successful and experienced maritime business, Samudera has achieved international success, including ISO 20002, IMO/ISM Code certification. The company says that the challenges of globalization should not hinder Samudera. "At a time when people are busy with the globalization issue, we have already gone one step ahead," said Randy.
