The Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection (Ministry PPPA) has commended the swift action taken by Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora) Erick Thohir in responding to allegations of sexual harassment and physical violence involving Indonesian rock climbing athletes. The prompt response is considered an important foundation for ensuring athlete protection and creating a safe and dignified sporting environment.

Ministry PPPA Minister Arifah Fauzi expressed deep concern and empathy over the case that has tarnished the world of sports. She assessed that the response from the Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora) demonstrates the state’s commitment to protecting athletes from all forms of violence.

“We appreciate the swift and responsive steps taken by Kemenpora in responding to the alleged case. The initial prompt response is an important form of commitment to ensure protection of athletes whilst creating a sporting environment that is safe, dignified, and free from violence,” said Arifah in a written statement received by Republika.co.id on Monday (2 March 2026).

The Ministry PPPA emphasised that victims must be placed at the centre of every handling process. Comprehensive assistance, ranging from psychological and medical services to legal aid, is deemed absolutely necessary. Additionally, victims must be protected from pressure, intimidation, and social stigma.

Arifah stressed that case handling must be carried out professionally, transparently, and fairly, in accordance with applicable legislation, particularly Law No. 12 of 2022 concerning the Crime of Sexual Violence. The legal process, she said, must proceed with zero tolerance for perpetrators whilst ensuring victim confidentiality and safety.

Furthermore, the Ministry PPPA will coordinate with Kemenpora, law enforcement agencies, relevant ministries and institutions, and sports organisations to ensure the case is handled seriously. Beyond this, strengthening the system of sexual violence prevention in the sporting environment is also being promoted through athlete protection policies, safe complaint mechanisms, and education on power relations.

“We call upon all parties to refrain from spreading information that could harm victims and to respect the ongoing legal process. The state is present to ensure that every woman and child, including athletes, are protected from violence and receive justice,” said Arifah.
