JAKARTA – The Indonesian Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) is tightening oversight of passenger transport fleets ahead of the 2026 Eid al-Fitr homecoming (mudik). One of the measures being carried out is safety inspections, or ramp checks, on buses operating in various regions. The aim is to ensure that vehicles used by the public for the mudik journey are roadworthy and safe. ‘This year, 143.9 million people will travel for mudik; that is around 50 percent of the population, so a series of regulations and policies is required,’ Aan said in an official statement on Thursday, 5 March 2026. He added that vehicle checks had begun since late February to ensure the readiness of public transportation fleets, especially long-distance buses. Of the total vehicles that have undergone inspections, the majority were deemed fit to operate. However, a number of buses were found to have deficiencies, requiring repairs or even prohibiting operation. He said safety inspections would continue until 29 March 2026 at Type A Terminals, Bus Pools, Rest Areas, Toll Exits, and other accident-prone areas.
