Jakarta – Indonesia’s Ministry of Transport has begun transporting motorcycles for homebound travellers through the Mudik Gratis (Motis) programme using railway services to reduce traffic congestion and enhance journey safety during the Eid 1447 Hijriah transport period.

“We transported 254 motorcycles on the Central Route departure today,” said Arif Anwar, Director of Railway Traffic and Transport at the Ministry of Transport’s Directorate General of Railways, during the first Motis programme dispatch at Pasar Senen Station in Jakarta on Friday.

He emphasised that the programme represents one of the government’s strategies to discourage long-distance motorcycle travel during mudik, which historically carries high accident risks on public roads.

Arif explained that this year’s Motis programme offers transport capacity for 11,900 motorcycles, expected to reduce the number of two-wheelers undertaking long-distance journeys during the Eid period. The government hopes this reduction will significantly lower traffic accident rates during the mudik holiday period compared to previous years.

“Currently, 12,941 motorcycles have registered, representing 108.75 per cent of the quota. Registration has exceeded our capacity,” he noted.

He attributed the high demand to the programme’s growing popularity amongst travellers wishing to transport motorcycles to their home towns without undertaking arduous overland journeys.

“Although registrations have exceeded the quota, we will conduct verification. If cancellations occur, those on the waiting list can immediately register again. If anyone still wishes to register, standby places remain available on our website at nusantara.kemenhub.go.id,” he explained.

The government has implemented a verification process to ensure participant data validity whilst providing opportunities for others to participate if quota spaces become available.

Programme requirements include motorcycles with engine capacity below 200 cubic centimetres, plus valid original documents comprising Family Card, Vehicle Registration Certificate, and Driving Licence.

The government operates four daily Motis train journeys comprising three main routes: the North, Central, and South routes to serve motorcycle transport for homebound travellers.

Through the Motis programme, the government hopes citizens can still transport motorcycles to their home towns whilst reducing long-distance two-wheeler travel to improve safety during the Eid holiday period.
