Ministry of Transmigration Sends 36 Participants to China to Learn Poverty Alleviation Practices
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Transmigration (Kementrans) has sent 36 training participants to China to learn poverty alleviation practices and rural development that will be applied in Indonesia’s transmigration areas.
Minister of Transmigration M Iftitah Sulaiman Suryanagara stated that the programme is part of the government’s efforts to accelerate poverty alleviation through the development of transmigration areas.
“Because we assess that China has been quite successful in poverty alleviation efforts. We want to learn those best practices and implement them in Indonesia,” Iftitah said at the Ministry of Transmigration office in Jakarta on Thursday.
According to him, China was chosen as the training location because it is considered to have a long history and success in gradually reducing poverty rates over four decades.
He explained that the participants will be in China for about two weeks to attend training related to rural development and poverty alleviation.
“There, there is something called the Poverty Alleviation Centre. So there is one centre that focuses on alleviating poverty,” he said.
The event will take place from 9 to 22 May 2026 and will include lecture sessions, discussions, and field visits in Beijing and the Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan Province.
The participants consist of elements from the Ministry of Transmigration, trainers from transmigration training centres, and academics from 10 universities, including Universitas Indonesia, IPB University, Universitas Padjadjaran, Institut Teknologi Bandung, Universitas Diponegoro, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember, Universitas Airlangga, Universitas Brawijaya, and Universitas Hasanuddin.
“They will later become part of the Expedition Patriot team to contribute in 53 transmigration areas, especially 10 transmigration areas in Papua,” he said.
He explained that the results of the training will be compiled into a policy paper and an implementable guidebook that can be applied in transmigration areas.
In addition, participants from academic elements will also be involved in preparing the Expedition Patriot team that will be deployed to the field.
“We have also asked the academics for the output of this goodwill to create a guidebook that is truly implementable and applicable,” Iftitah revealed.
According to him, the government wants to build a poverty alleviation model that can be applied from the regional, district, village, to family levels.
He gave an example that one patriot member can assist around 10 heads of extremely poor families to improve their welfare.
“If one patriot is responsible for 10 heads of families who are classified as extremely poor and poor, if there are 1,000, it can already bring out 10,000,” he said.
On the same occasion, a participant from Southwest Papua and the Head of Lamona District, Sorong Regency, Oktovianus Kolin, said that the training is expected to help the development of the Klamono-Segun transmigration area in Sorong Regency.
He said that poverty alleviation practices in China will be studied by him to be applied in the economic development of communities in the Southwest Papua transmigration area.
“I want to learn how this Ministry of Transmigration programme can be brought to my work area in Southwest Papua,” said Oktovianus.
