Ministry of Transmigration Accelerates Development of Barelang Transmigration Zone
The Ministry of Transmigration (Kementrans) continues to strengthen the development of the Batam Rempang Galang (Barelang) Transmigration Zone, with an emphasis on job creation and improving community welfare in an inclusive and sustainable manner. These efforts are aimed at ensuring the area's reorganisation proceeds in alignment with residents' interests.
Minister of Transmigration M. Iftitah Sulaiman Suryanagara affirmed that the government is working to ensure Rempang residents do not merely relocate to new sites but also have access to sustainable livelihoods. "The principle is that people should not simply move to a new place — they must also have employment that continues to generate income for their welfare," Minister Iftitah said after attending the Chinese New Year 2577 celebrations in Batam on Monday, 16 February 2026.
In supporting the development of the Rempang area, the Ministry of Transmigration is collaborating with BP Batam and the Batam City Government. Programme progress is also reported periodically to the Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono.
According to Minister Iftitah, conditions in Rempang over the past year have become increasingly conducive. The more peaceful situation is regarded as vital capital for driving the zone's development whilst fostering a healthy investment climate. "Praise be to God, over the past year the situation has become increasingly peaceful and conducive. This is important for creating a comfortable investment climate for all parties. This is what we will continue to build," he said.
As a concrete form of support, the Ministry of Transmigration has handed over 16 fishing vessels of 5 Gross Tonnage (GT) each to transmigrant fishermen in the Tanjung Banon Transmigration Zone, Barelang, Batam City, Riau Islands. Each group of fishermen received one vessel complete with fishing support equipment.
Deputy Minister of Transmigration Viva Yoga Mauladi stated that the assistance is expected to boost the income of coastal communities. "The fishermen are very pleased with this aid. We hope that with these vessels, their income will increase because, God willing, their catch will grow significantly, enabling them to support their families," he said during the handover ceremony in December 2025.
In addition to the vessel assistance, the Ministry of Transmigration, together with the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) and BP Batam, has also conducted capacity-building training for fishermen in the Tanjung Banon transmigration zone. The training covers techniques for maximising catch yields as well as fish processing to achieve higher market value.
The development of the Barelang Transmigration Zone is expected not only to drive regional economic growth but also to serve as a model for transmigration zone management that prioritises dialogue, sustainability, and the improvement of local community welfare.
