Jakarta — The Ministry of Tourism has stated its desire to establish Jakarta as a destination visited by the public during the Nyepi and Lebaran holiday periods.

“There is no need to travel abroad; travel within Indonesia, particularly in Jakarta city. There are many tourist attractions that are both excellent and educational,” said Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana during her visit to the National Museum in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Widiyanti noted that Jakarta offers numerous educational tourist destinations suitable for children, including the Museum of National Awakening, the National Gallery, and the Indonesian National Museum (MNI).

The public can learn from the Museum of National Awakening, which displays diverse collections from the former Jawa medical school education known as STOVIA. This institution played an important role in producing intellectuals of the national movement, including the Budi Utomo organisation.

The Indonesian National Museum is renowned as the repository of all Indonesian national history. Visitors can now see the Java Man fossil, or Homo erectus, the revolutionary discovery by Dutch military doctor Eugene Dubois, found on the banks of the Solo River in Trinil Village, Ngawi in 1891-1892.

Widiyanti also encouraged the public to visit the indonesia.travel website for information about various events and other interesting tourist destinations.

Separately, the Ministry’s Deputy Head of Marketing Ni Made Ayu Marthini added that the Ministry of Tourism, together with the Jakarta Provincial Government and the local Tourism Office, wants to change Jakarta’s stigma as merely a city for work-related travel into a city offering diverse attractions and interesting destinations for tourists.

Some attractions she recommended include Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII), Ancol, and Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK).

Earlier, the Traffic and Road Transport Control Division (Dalops LLAJ) of Jakarta’s Transportation Office estimated that 4,024,251 residents would not travel outside Jakarta or would not undertake the 2026 Lebaran exodus.

“We estimate that the number of people who will travel out of Jakarta is predicted at around 6,653,749 people, whilst those who will remain in the city number 4,024,251 people,” said Head of the Traffic Division of Jakarta’s Transportation Office, Yayat Sudrajat.

To anticipate traffic congestion at these locations, Jakarta’s Provincial Government is considering traffic management strategies including the “contra flow” system, vehicle restrictions using odd-even methods, and mobility restrictions in tourist areas.

The provincial government has mobilised 2,082 personnel from the Transportation Office, along with support equipment including 90 patrol vehicles, 90 tow trucks, 240 portable traffic signs, and 1,350 traffic cones or water barriers during the 2026 Lebaran transport period.

Meanwhile, PT Jasa Marga predicts that the exodus peak will occur on 18 March 2026, three days before Lebaran (H-3), whilst the return traffic will peak on 23 March 2026 (H+3 Lebaran).
