JAKARTA — The Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag) has prepared 6,859 migrant-friendly mosques distributed across various migration routes throughout Indonesia. The programme aims to provide services for residents travelling home during the 2026 Lebaran holiday break.

The Migrant-Friendly Mosque Programme was launched during the kick-off of the Indonesian Mosque Expedition in Jakarta on Wednesday, 11 March 2026, officially launched by Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs (Wamenag) Romo Muhammad Syafi’i. The programme is part of the Ministry of Religious Affairs’ efforts to expand the role of mosques as centres of public service.

In his remarks, the Deputy Minister stated that the Ministry of Religious Affairs wishes to revitalise the role of mosques so they are not merely used for routine worship activities but also provide broader benefits to the community.

“We want to change the face of mosques which have so far appeared to only open for five daily prayers. Mosques must return to their function of providing service to the community,” said the Deputy Minister in a written statement.

He explained that Kemenag has prepared thousands of mosques in various regions to provide services for migrants travelling along national migration routes. “The Ministry of Religious Affairs has formulated services for migrants to be implemented by mosques throughout Indonesia, totalling 6,859 mosques,” he said.

According to the Deputy Minister, the presence of mosques along migration routes can serve as safe and comfortable stopping points for travellers during their journey home. “Mosques are not only places of prayer but also stopping points that provide various conveniences for migrants,” he clarified.

Various services have been arranged at these mosques to support migrants’ needs. These include 24-hour access to mosques and prayer rooms, parking areas, clean toilets, rest areas, health services for first aid, and clean water availability.

In addition, mosque managers are expected to provide mobile device and communication equipment charging facilities, information centres for migrants, as well as drinking water and light refreshments.
