Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Protection for Indonesian Migrant Workers (P2MI) is encouraging an increase in the placement of Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) in the digital sector through collaborations with the education sector, including Universitas Bina Nusantara (Binus). Deputy Minister of P2MI, Christina Aryani, in a statement received in Jakarta on Friday, said that interest among graduates of Universitas Binus to work abroad is quite high, particularly in the digital sector. “Interest among Binus graduates to work abroad is quite high, especially in the digital sector. However, they still face obstacles in accessing information and the right placement channels,” said Christina after receiving a visit from Binus academics at the Ministry of P2MI in Jakarta on Thursday (26/3). She added that Universitas Binus has great potential in producing digital talent, ranging from information technology, computer science, to information systems, with more than 120,000 alumni. “So far, the number of vacancies in the digital sector has been small. However, this is not because there is no need, but because there is no confidence yet from placement agencies that Indonesia is capable of supplying ready-to-work digital labour,” she explained. Therefore, continued Christina, the Ministry of P2MI is beginning to focus on developing the digital sector as one of the strategic opportunities for PMI placement. According to her, this includes mapping the potential global labour needs, strengthening the competencies of prospective migrant workers, and improving the quality of the domestic digital workforce supply. It was also stated that synergy between the government and the education sector is key in formulating the right policies to encourage an increase in PMI in the digital sector, prioritising protection aspects. “We welcome input from Binus academics as part of efforts to formulate more adaptive and responsive policies to the needs of the global labour market,” said Christina.
