Jakarta — Indonesia’s Ministry of Migrant Worker Protection (KP2MI) has launched a people’s business credit (KUR) programme for prospective Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) to facilitate access to financing for their overseas placement process.

“Today we officially launch the KUR Migrant Worker Placement Programme as a collaborative effort to strengthen access to safe, affordable financing that supports prospective migrant workers,” said Minister of Migrant Worker Protection Mukhtarudin at the launch ceremony held at the KP2MI office in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Mukhtarudin explained that the KUR launch represents the government’s commitment to protect prospective migrant workers from substantial placement costs. The programme also aims to prevent predatory lending practices that frequently affect prospective migrant workers.

Under this scheme, prospective migrant workers can obtain financing loans with a maximum ceiling of 100 million rupiah and interest rates of 6 per cent for various placement needs, including training, competency certification, work visa processing, travel tickets, and accommodation.

“This is to protect prospective migrant workers from being burdened by excessive costs. The government is committed to providing access to safe and affordable financing, so the placement process can proceed more safely and in a planned manner,” Mukhtarudin said.

However, prospective migrant workers frequently experience difficulties accessing financing when seeking employment abroad. The government therefore aims to facilitate their efforts through financing loans for the placement process.

“For this reason, the state must ensure that every prospective migrant worker receives access to information, fair financing, and protection from the initial stages of the placement process,” he emphasised.

The KUR Migrant Worker Placement Programme has received support from various ministries and government agencies, including the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), KUR distribution agencies, and KUR guarantee providers.

The programme is expected to provide information on safe migration whilst helping communities access official placement financing.

“We continue to commit to strengthening governance, expanding reach, and ensuring that every Indonesian migrant worker departs with adequate protection and financing,” Mukhtarudin said.
