Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Partners with Conservation International to Strengthen Marine Conservation Education
The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) is promoting the active role of international conservation organisations in enhancing public understanding of the importance of marine conservation areas. This was stated by Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, during a visit by Sebastian Troëng, Chief Executive Officer of Conservation International, at the KKP office on Tuesday, 5 May 2026.
In the meeting, both parties discussed strengthening cooperation in marine conservation. Minister Trenggono specifically requested that Conservation International participate in disseminating the importance of conservation areas to the wider public. According to him, the success of conservation does not only depend on government policies but also on public understanding and participation.
“Conservation requires explanation on how important it is,” said Trenggono.
KKP itself targets expanding marine conservation areas to reach 30 percent of Indonesia’s total waters, or around 97.5 million hectares, by 2045. To support this target, KKP prioritises a blue economy approach through five main programmes, which balance economic utilisation and ecosystem sustainability. The implementation of this policy is strengthened through multi-stakeholder collaboration at both national and local levels.
Trenggono expressed optimism that with strong synergy, marine ecosystem protection can proceed consistently and provide real benefits for the current and future generations.
Meanwhile, Sebastian Troëng welcomed the invitation and reaffirmed Conservation International’s commitment to supporting Indonesia’s efforts. He assessed that Indonesia has a strategic role in global marine conservation, making public education key to success.
“Public awareness is the main foundation in maintaining marine sustainability. We are ready to collaborate to strengthen that understanding,” he said.
This cooperation is expected to accelerate Indonesia’s marine protection efforts while strengthening Indonesia’s position as one of the countries with the largest conservation commitments in the world.
As is known, Minister Trenggono places ecological health as the commander of national marine and fisheries sector development. Through strengthened policy implementation and multi-stakeholder collaboration, KKP is optimistic that marine ecosystem protection can proceed consistently and provide real benefits for current and future generations.
