Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries: Fishing ports to remain operational during Eid holiday
Jakarta — The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has ensured that fishing port activities throughout Indonesia will continue operating during the 2026 Eid holiday, thereby maintaining fish stock availability during Eid al-Fitr celebrations.
The Director General of Capture Fisheries at KKP, Lotharia Latif, stated during a press conference in Jakarta on Monday that despite some fishermen returning to their hometowns, landing, unloading, and distribution of fish catches will continue uninterrupted.
He noted that in the lead-up to and during the Eid period, fishing port activities experience considerable dynamism. “Some fishermen are preparing to return to their home regions, whilst others are capitalising on the momentum before the extended holiday to conduct fishing and fish landing activities,” he explained.
To maintain smooth operations, Latif stated that he has instructed all staff to conduct standby drills at fishing ports. He identified three primary focuses for the KKP: strengthening fire-safe fishing ports, enhancing public service quality, and reinforcing data collection to support optimisation of non-tax state revenues (PNBP).
“Integrated fishing port security teams must always remain on standby, harbour masters at fishing ports must be able to ensure maritime safety oversight and discipline at quays are maintained rigorously,” he said.
Latif also emphasised the importance of fire prevention measures at fishing ports, including maintaining safe vessel mooring distances, strict oversight of welding activities, and inspection of vessel conditions before crews leave. Furthermore, the KKP considers support from the Water and Air Police Corps and the Indonesian Navy essential to safeguard fishing port areas and ensure vital zones remain controlled.
He also requested active participation from fishermen’s associations and community groups in building a community-based surveillance system.
