Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries and Padang City Government Achieve 100% Restoration of Fisheries Sector
The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) of the Republic of Indonesia, in collaboration with the West Sumatra Provincial Government and the Padang City Government, has distributed aid and conducted the restocking of catfish seeds for communities affected by hydrometeorological disasters in Koto Panjang Ikur Koto, Koto Tangah District, Padang City, on Saturday (1/8/2026).
This strategic move is part of an effort to accelerate the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the fisheries sector following disasters that hit several areas in West Sumatra. In addition to the distribution of 101,000 catfish seeds, the KKP also provided aid in the form of cool boxes for processing and marketing, fish feed, and fishing gear such as nets for local fishermen.
The Director of Infrastructure at the Directorate General of Aquaculture, KKP, Enggar Saptopo, stated that the recovery of the freshwater aquaculture sector in Padang City has now reached 100%. This success was achieved through solid collaboration and synergy between the central, provincial, and local governments.
“KKP, together with the West Sumatra Provincial Government and Padang City Government, acted swiftly to conduct post-disaster rehabilitation. For Padang City, the recovery of freshwater aquaculture has reached 100 per cent through interventions such as the provision of seeds, feed, cool boxes, and fishing nets. Most importantly, the community remains motivated to immediately resume their economic activities,” said Enggar Saptopo.
Enggar added that the KKP has also deployed fisheries extension officers to provide continuous technical assistance to ensure that community aquaculture businesses can flourish again. He expressed hope that this synergy would continue to be strengthened through to the future development stages of the fisheries sector.
Meanwhile, the Head of the Padang City Fisheries and Food Service, Alfiadi, expressed deep appreciation for the sustained attention from the KKP from the emergency response phase through to the recovery phase.
“The KKP’s attention is a great blessing for Padang City. The fisheries sector is one of the main pillars of our community’s economy. The recovery of fisheries land in Padang has covered an area of 7,930 square metres. This gradual assistance serves as an extraordinary boost for the community to rise again,” said Alfiadi.
Alfiadi explained that the KKP’s intervention focuses not only on physical aid and infrastructure but also on increasing Human Resource (HR) capacity. The KKP has assigned specialised technical assistants for one month in Padang City to oversee economic recovery and support the development of the ‘Kampung Nelayan Merah Putih’ (Red and White Fishing Village) in Padang Sarai Village.
Through this cross-sector synergy, the government is optimistic that the economic recovery of disaster-affected communities can proceed more rapidly and sustainably, while strengthening the food security of the Padang City population.
