The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) is currently preparing technical regulations as a follow-up to Presidential Regulation (Perpres) No. 110 of 2025. Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) is promoting the acceleration of Carbon Economic Value (NEK) implementation in the marine and fisheries sector to realise a sustainable national blue economy. During a Working Meeting of Commission IV of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) with the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, the Minister of Forestry, and the Minister of Agriculture at the Parliamentary Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday, Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono stated that his ministry is focusing on three main pillars of NEK implementation. “The first is the regulatory aspect, where KKP is currently preparing technical regulations as a follow-up to Presidential Regulation (Perpres) No. 110 of 2025,” said Minister Trenggono. Furthermore, KKP is also focusing on strengthening data and information, including mapping the extent of blue carbon ecosystems, determining emission baselines, and accurately calculating CO2 absorption potential. “The third is pilot projects for blue carbon restoration and emission reduction programmes in the fisheries sector,” said Trenggono. In addition, he conveyed that the total potential blue carbon area from mangroves under KKP’s authority reaches 997,733 hectares and is projected to absorb up to 6.3 million tons of CO2 equivalent per year. Meanwhile, the potential carbon from seagrass ecosystems covers up to 860,156 hectares and is projected to absorb 3.7 million tons of CO2 equivalent per year. “Thus, with the overall area of mangroves under the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries and seagrass, the total is around 10 million tons of CO2 equivalent,” said Trenggono. To maximise this potential, the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries believes that integration is needed between territorial certainty in the form of marine spatial utilisation, a carbon unit registration system, and supervision in the blue carbon trading mechanism, as well as maintaining the national blue carbon absorption contribution target. “The use of marine space is the main distinguishing characteristic between blue carbon and land-based sectors. Every carbon mitigation action must have approval for the suitability of marine spatial utilisation activities, as the primary prerequisite for project site legality,” explained Trenggono. In addition, he stated that KKP has also prepared trading procedures in accordance with Perpres No. 110 of 2025. “All the procedures prepared have considered the impact of Carbon Economic Value, which will provide real contributions to the state and coastal communities in an optimal and sustainable manner,” said the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries.
